Kansanshi Solo Challenge

The Kansanshi Solo Challenge (14 Sep to 18 Oct) was a 2020 alternative to the normal annual Kansanshi Cycling Weekend. It offered the opportunity to try any of a series of eleven MTB, road riding and running challenges, in your own time, beginning with 5km and 10km trail runs and MTB rides in Week 1, all the way up to a 100km MTB ride in Week 4, followed by a 'cool down' Week 5 with a return to the shorter challenges.

The Kansanshi Cycling Team worked hard to create 5km, 10km, 25km, 50km and 100km routes in the Kansanshi game park (and around the Mine perimeter) and also set a 21.1km route along the Smelter road. The crew also built a new trailhead from where most of the challenges started. FQM kindly permitted access to these sites for anyone in the community wishing to take part.

An added benefit of the Challenge is that entry fees were directed towards Kansanshi Kids on Bikes, a programme being implemented by the Kansanshi Cycling Team to develop riding in local community schools. Furthermore, entrants were invited to pledge a donation to the family of Anthony Malambo, a beloved friend of Kansanshi Cycling and Kansanshi Events, whose memorial was held during the Challenge, a year after his untimely death on his bike in a road accident. Many activities were done with Anthony very much in our hearts and minds. Kansanshi Events provided bumper stickers for participants to use on their cars to remind other drivers to keep a safe distance from cyclists.

19 July 2020: KGE Sundowner Charity Run & Cycle

Shout out to everyone who braved the cold and the wind to support our charity run and cycle at KGE on Saturday 18th July. The event included an auction of beautiful copper jewellery from Nsanshi Art, and all proceeds went to the Young Women's Christian Association's wonderful work with survivors of gender abuse. The event raised K22,400 in total!

Much as we would have liked to open this event to all, this was not possible in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. We look forward to running events in which everyone can once again take part.

Thanks, everyone...stay fit and stay safe!
